Arecibo Observatory

Some quick questions about the observations we made last week:

If you want to provide the answers to these questions, send them to Martha, and remember to explain in detail how you arrived at the answer. Where possible/relevant, provide web links. We'll post the answers in a few days.

  1. What is the beginning and ending RA of the drift sequence we took?
Find the answer by looking at the log file that Sabrina wrote during the observations. The log files are linked on the A2010 site at Arecibo.
There is a lot of detail about the A2010 observing program on that page. If you want to know what observations are coming up, and who is doing them, keep an eye on that page. For example, you will see that the day after the workshop, we learned that we will start observing again on August 16th (as well as a short run on July 15).

  2. What are the declinations of the drifts of each individual beam?
It might be useful to refer to the memo we wrote on ALFA beam rotation, or some of the talks given at the Union College workshop.

  3. Which data file contains the best drift covering NGC 5363, and which beam track should show the maximum signal from that galaxy?
Remember to look at the log file. You might also want to thank Sabrina for keeping it, because in doing so, she has saved you the trouble of having to figure out which of the FITS files corresponds to what LST (wapp.20050706.a2010.000N.fits doesn't convey everything you need to know!).

  4. Which is the bad beam? Do you remember what was wrong with it?

  5. There is a HI emission source at 14h39m11s seen in beams 1 and 6 (at least). What is it?

  6. What questions do you have for the rest of us?
